Two states that never sought federal approval (Arizona and California — EPA implements there directly), two approved programs (Nevada 1992, Hawaii 2002), three EPA-direct Pacific territories, and 76 tribal nations with tanks — led by the Navajo Nation's 1,045, the largest single tribal program in America. In an emergency always call 911 and the National Response Center 1-800-424-8802.

California's three layers + Nevada's live clock
In California, three governments touch every tank: EPA Region 9 (federal — no SPA), the state's stricter program (annual inspections; single-walled tanks had to close by Dec 31, 2025), and your local CUPA — the county or city-fire agency that issues the permit and can red-tag a fill pipe. In Nevada, a federal codification rule (91 FR 66652, published Oct 22, 2026) takes effect Dec 21, 2026 unless EPA receives adverse comment by Nov 23.
Fire, typhoon, hurricane
Wildfire season (May–Oct/Nov) for CA/AZ/NV, typhoon season (Jun–Nov) for Guam and the Northern Marianas — Typhoon Mawar (2023) is the response precedent — and Central Pacific hurricane season (Jun 1–Nov 30) for Hawaii, where Red Hill's closure-in-place continues under the state health department with EPA.
